The “bible” is a rest for a book, originally a bible. The solid wood alludes to the basic material used to make paper (the recipient of the written word). Because the book is not quite opened to 180°, the binding is protected and the pages are held in place. However, in the form of an open book the rest itself encourages you to turn the pages.
In the exhibition that is currently running at the “de Mijlpaal” gallery in Heusden-Zolder, we twice placed the °bible on the floor, once as an “open” rest with a symbolic allusion to “giving” hands and once as a “closed” rest alluding to “merciful” hands.
